I posed a question to myself the other day… If I was to try to convince a non-cozy "addict" (I'm afraid that the word "addict" does indeed describe some of us!) that the cozy mystery genre is worth pursuing, what would I do? Hmmm… I could give the person the definition of a cozy mystery novel and then try to convince the person that everyone who tries one goes back for another… sort of like potato chips. OR, I could try to liken cozy mystery books to books that the person had more than likely read. OR, I could pay the person a large amount of money to make it worth his/her while to read a cozy mystery novel, knowing that, again, the analogy with the potato chips. OR, I could give the person the first novel from Anne George's Southern Sisters cozy mystery series.

Patricia Cornwell… I know she's not cozy, but still….

Years ago, when I first started using the internet, I joined a group of mystery readers who only read novels by Patricia Cornwell. At that time, I truly enjoyed Patricia Cornwell, even though she was not at all cozy!

Some Cozies are Simply Cozier than Others!

It occurs in New York City, bustling with activity… OR… a quaint English village.
The main character is a hip, young man with a beautiful young wife and one child… OR… a nice "older" teacher, getting ready to retire.
It involves a sleek Corvette… OR… an umbrella/cane.

I remember when my husband first joined audible.com several years ago. He kept trying to get me to buy some of the audio books. Every three or four months I would go into their site and take a look to see if any of my favorite authors' books were included in their very big library of books. I was always disappointed to see that they had very few authors who I would actually "choose to choose." So, I stayed with my local library, preferring to get my audio books on their book cassettes… since my library carried a lot of my favorite authors.

As I was getting together the list of Edgar Awards in the Best Paperback Originals category, I was surprised to see several publishing companies that I simply did not recognize. What a surprise that Playboy actually published books… and not just their monthly magazines… In 1981, Thomas H. Cook's Blood Innocents was up for the Edgar's Best Paperback Original prize, with Playboy being his publisher. Who'd have known!?! I had no idea that Playboy published anything without glossy pictures!

I Couldn't Sleep, So I Thought I Would Read…..

Well, another one bites the dust! I am always very sad when I find that I absolutely cannot be faithful to an author who I have followed through several books.

Tonight, I found that I could not sleep, so I got my current trusty cozy mystery novel out to read, in hopes that I would be able to get so interested in the mystery that I didn't just lie there in bed worrying about things that are simply not big enough worries to worry about… As I read the book, I kept finding myself worrying about things that weren't worth worrying about…. and then I found myself worrying about how I was going to get out of bed to go find another book to read… without waking my husband.

I have a long list of authors who have been recommended to me by either my cozy mystery reading friends, past mystery reading group members, or people who have written to me (through this site) and suggested that I add a page for one (two, or three!) of their favorite cozy authors. I was going to start adding all of these authors…. first looking up each of these authors, and then "doing what I do."

I'll pass on that….book, that is….

Things have been hectic around my house, but I think that we are finally getting back to normal. I am hoping to get more reading done in the near future. I can't even imagine how I used to be able to read at least one book a week!

If you're anything like me, you probably like to see that a favorite author has merited a special award…….. especially an award for writing the very type of book that you enjoy reading. And, if you're anything like me, you probably don't know why that particular award was received. Was it given by other mystery book authors? Was it given by mystery book readers? (Or, was it given by the author's family and friends?)
