You're right… it does sound like D. R. Meredith… without the bird watching.

I went back through my bird-watching theme, and could not match any of those particular authors with the forensic anthropologist, May/December relationship.

Sound very similar to the series by D.R.Meredith. The only thing is these are not bird watchers. Megan Clark is a forensic anthropologist by education but works as a reference librarian in Amarillo, TX. Ryan was the father of her best friend when she was growing up. He is a professor at a university. They are involved in a mystery book discussion group in this series of five books. Oh and there is a hint of a May December relationship.

Oh this is going to make me nuts. I know this series. He's a retired (?) teacher if I remember correctly, and the father of one of the woman's friends (hence the reluctance to reveal how he feels about her).
