I really enjoy Penny Warner's books about a deaf journalist who runs a local weekly newspaper in a small town in California's Gold Country (the Connor Westphal series). I think they fall within the cozy realm. I believe she was nominated for an Agatha award in the late 90's. Her most recent book was back in 2007 (Dead Man's Hand).
