My Smile's Brighter than Yours!!!

April 28, 2009

OK! I'm off on another rant! So, be forewarned!

Have you noticed that lately, while watching American TV shows (as in USA shows>>> Yes, yes, I know: South America, Central America, Canada…) it has gotten to look like all of the actors are competing on who got the whitest veneers? (I think that is the name for those things. It's either that or luminaries, sort of like crowns, but I believe a whole lot more expensive!) Right when you see an actor open his  mouth, with the whiter than white teeth, an actress smiles and you see a dozen miniature flashbulbs go off!

Am I the only one who finds these "dazzling-est of dazzling" teeth distracting?!?  It has gotten to a point where even the actors who are playing street people, upon opening their mouths, sport their dentists' over-zealous whitening techniques.

I'm not advocating that we stop using "All-Whitening Crest/Colgate," but really… is a blindingly bright snow-scape what we are now going for? I mean, just how white is white?

Oh well, I guess that if I was able to get used to anorexic actresses who are "top heavy," I will soon get used to these new developments in our society. Oh, Brave New World….

Thank you for the grin. You cracked me up just when I needed it. I’ll now be on the lookout for the snowy caps.

“snowy caps”: What a great term for them!

Danna, while growing up I had to take iron pills because I was sickly a lot. Well now I don’t have white teeth they are dingy like a smokers teeth but they won’t ever be white at all and sometimes I envy people who have white teeth. I started taking allergy shots at 4 and a half yrs old was going 4 times a week. One of the things we never thought of was washing clothes. Mom would hangout clothes on line and bring them in then I would sleep on the sheets and pillow cases. Well, turned out I was allergic to all the pollen in the air so that was a no no.

Hi Alfred,

My son was diagnosed with allergies when he was little, also. But, by then the doctors knew about air-drying clothes and keeping the windows in the house closed all the time. While other people were enjoying the summer breezes and the smells of cut grass, we had our house totally closed off from all of that. Of course, our electric/gas bills were high, but it did seem to help quite a bit. Once I found a detergent that my son tolerated, I never changed it.

Also, we have those vinyl covers on all of our beds and pillows since allergens are VERY high in San Antonio. My son’s pediatrician called San Antonio the Allergy Capital of the world!

What I find even more distracting is movie stars who have their top teeth done up perfectly with veneers and whatnot but leave their bottom teeth alone.

I guess I understand lesser-known actors fixing just half of their teeth – it costs money to get your mouth fixed. It’s just so incongrous seeing perfect pearly whites on top and yellowed teeth on bottom.

Danna, super white teeth are distracting, but what I also find distracting is when the actor/actress has just the front four-six teeth extra perfect and extra white, but the rest of their teeth are natural, smaller, and darker. For some reason I can’t seem to get past that to really enjoy the part they are playing.

I enjoy reading your rants – they are right on!

Well, it looks like I’m not the only one who finds this whole whiter-than-white teeth thing distracting!
