Could either one of these series be what you are looking for?
Mission to Sonora, the Linda Bluenight series by Rebecca Cramer or Nicolette Scott Mysteries by Val Davis (Track of the Scorpion).

Sounds kind of like Carreta de la Muerte by Mari Privette Ulmer. (Despite the fact that the title's in Spanish, it's a cozy written in English.)

It's set in New Mexico, the sleuth is an amateur detective/former lawyer/current bed-and-breakfast owner, and the book I mentioned does involve art theft. So, maybe...?

Sounds a bit like the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde.
The series' title is also the heroine's name. She's a literary detective who determines whether a manuscript is authentic and she also gets called in when an authentic manuscript is stolen. Some of the scrapes she gets into are weird and I was not always sure just where the book I read was set. But one thing is clear: Thursday is based in London.
